Botox — what it actually does, and what it doesn't
Botox is botulinum toxin type A — a purified protein that temporarily blocks the nerve signal to a specific muscle. The important word is "specific". Botox doesn't treat wrinkles directly; it relaxes the muscle whose repeated contraction creates the wrinkle. Forehead lines, glabellar "11s" between the brows, crow's feet, and bunny lines on the nose all respond well because they are dynamic — they appear when you express. Static wrinkles, the kind that stay etched into the skin at rest, respond less and often need a different tool entirely.
At Skin Essentials we use FDA-Philippines-approved botulinum toxin administered by Dr. JC Hers personally. A full upper-face Botox session takes 15–20 minutes including the consultation. There's no general anesthesia, no recovery downtime — most clients return to work the same afternoon. Effect begins around day 3, peaks around day 14, and lasts 3–4 months on average. Jawline-slimming Botox (masseter Botox) sits longer at 4–6 months because the masseter is a larger muscle with a slower turnover.
We'll tell you in advance if Botox isn't the right answer. Deeply etched static lines often respond better to dermal fillers or skin-resurfacing treatments. Sagging cheeks or jowls usually need a PDO thread liftrather than further Botox. If you're weighing options, the free consultation covers all three and gives you a written quote you can take away.

FAQ
Common questions
What is Botox and how does it work?
+
Botox is a purified protein (Botulinum Toxin Type A) that temporarily relaxes facial muscles responsible for wrinkles. When injected, it blocks nerve signals to these muscles, smoothing existing lines and preventing new ones from forming.
How long does a Botox treatment take?
+
A typical Botox session takes only 15-30 minutes. You can schedule it during your lunch break and return to work immediately after. There's no downtime required.
Is Botox painful?
+
Most patients describe Botox injections as a slight pinch. We use very fine needles and can apply numbing cream if needed. The discomfort is minimal and brief.
When will I see Botox results?
+
You'll start seeing results within 3-5 days, with full effects visible at 10-14 days after treatment. Results typically last 3-6 months depending on the treatment area and individual factors.
Are there any side effects?
+
Side effects are minimal and temporary. You may experience slight redness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites, which usually resolves within hours to a few days.
How much Botox do I need?
+
The number of units needed varies by treatment area and individual muscle strength. Common areas require: Forehead (10-30 units), Frown lines (10-25 units), Crow's feet (8-20 units per side). Our doctors will assess your needs during consultation.
